Good Design Lab —
A design programme that puts the human back at the centre.

You notice when something just works.
You care how things feel to hold.
You want to design with that intention.
This is the place to learn how.

We're restoring something that's been lost: the discipline to put human experience before everything else.

For emerging designers, researchers, and practitioners who care about the craft.

What It Is

Research

Start with the person who will use it. Who are they? How will they reach for it? What will confuse them? Design that doesn't begin here doesn't begin at all.

Practice

Full Saturdays in the studio. You'll build, iterate, and develop ideas the way working designers do — with discipline, not decoration.

Evaluation

A guest expert who will tell you honestly where your work stands. Not to discourage you — to raise your standard permanently.

Design Principles

Design is an act of empathy. It asks: what does this person need — and how can I step out of the way and let them have it?

Dieter Rams showed us that good design is not about the designer. It's about the person who will live with what the designer makes. We teach this discipline applied to today: products, apps, systems, environments.

Human Interaction First

Before materials, before form — think about the person. How will they reach for it? What will confuse them? What will make them trust it? Design begins with that question.

Focus Over Noise

The best products disappear. They don't show off. They don't demand attention. They simply let the human do what they came to do — and stay completely out of the way.

Form Through Purpose

Form isn't something you invent. It's something you earn — through understanding constraints, materials, and the exact job this thing needs to do for a real person.

Principles We Teach

  • Good design earns its innovation — only change what genuinely improves how people use it
  • Good design makes a product immediately understandable
  • Good design is useful before it is expressive
  • Good design is honest about what something is and does
  • Good design is unobtrusive — it leaves space for the person using it
  • Good design is thorough down to the last detail, because the person will feel every detail
  • Good design is as little design as possible

Why It Matters

Every product you design will be held, used, and lived with by a real person. They will feel whether you cared. They will sense whether you thought about them.

When design is careless, the human absorbs the friction. When design is honest and clear, the object disappears — and the person just lives.

We take that responsibility seriously. And we'll teach you to do the same.

How It Works

01
6–8 Saturdays
One full day per week in the studio. No distractions — just work, thinking, and critique.
02
A Small Group
A deliberately small cohort. Everyone gets direct feedback. Everyone's work is seen.
03
Led by an Expert
A practitioner who has made real things teaches you how to make real things.
04
Final Review
Your work is assessed honestly against the principles of Good Design. You'll know exactly where you stand.

This is for you if...

You're not satisfied with pretty. You want purposeful.

You think deeply about how the person on the other end will feel.

You're ready for critique that makes your work genuinely better.

You believe design is a responsibility, not just a skill.
